Happiness is in the chores

Reading the title, I am not sure you will agree with me. Let me explain. Last summer, my brother-in-law lent me his trailer. I had to do some digging at home and I used it to transport earth, gravel, etc. In short, I used it to transport my car. In short, I had it at home from April to the end of July and it was very useful. Our deal was this. “I’ll lend it to you for free, but as it needs to be repainted, it would be fun if you painted it before giving it back to me. I didn’t really have time to think. Motivated by the fact that I needed the trailer quickly and over a long period of time, I said: Ok, fine! However, inside I was thinking: “Ouch, what have I gotten myself into?

So I used the trailer a few times in April and May, but not feeling like painting it, it sat in my garage until July. Every time I saw it, it seemed to say, “When are you going to paint me, dear? And I would look away as if to avoid this “chore” that I had accepted.

Here is the rest of the story. On August 31st, I kicked myself in the right place and finally painted the famous trailer. Luckily, it only took me two short hours. But believe it or not, while repainting it, I found myself enjoying it. I swear, I enjoyed it. Better still, I was so proud of myself that I talked about it for the next week to everyone I met. “Have you seen the trailer for The Brother-in-Law? Look at the job I did there! Nice, huh?” etc. You get the idea.

I’m not a mind reader, but I’m sure you’ve experienced something similar. That is, there is an action, a chore that you put off because you just don’t feel like it. I’ll bet you that if you do it as soon as possible, you’ll enjoy it. You know this because you’ve already experienced this kind of pleasure, don’t you?

As for me, when I have a chore coming up in the future, I’ve decided to tell myself that I’ll probably enjoy doing it…. and I’ll do it.
