Marc Ranger served as the Quebec Director of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) from January 2016 until the fall of 2021. Prior to this role, he held the position of Assistant Director, responsible for the municipal sector, land transportation, and crown corporations. CUPE is the largest union in the country, with over 750,000 members, including around 135,000 in Quebec, spread across thirteen distinct sectors. He spent nearly 25 years at CUPE. Before that, he worked as a Union Advisor at the International Union of Service Employees (UIES-SQEES-298 FTQ) in the health sector.
Throughout his long career in the labor movement, he was involved in numerous negotiations, both at the federal and provincial levels. From 2013 to 2015, he was the spokesperson for a large coalition that represented all employees in the municipal and land transportation sectors, the Union Coalition for Free Negotiation. He was the spokesperson at the central bargaining table for around 65,000 public sector members affiliated with the FTQ (Health and Education) during the 2021 negotiation round. Throughout his career, he has always believed that proximity to stakeholders, both internally and externally, and a strong presence “on the ground” were key to resolving disputes and achieving beneficial outcomes for all parties.
Marc Ranger has been a guest speaker at numerous conferences, forums, and debates on topics such as collective bargaining, crisis management, communication, mobilization, and the importance of proactive action in the face of change. He also taught collective bargaining at the School of Management Sciences (ÉSG) at UQAM.
He has consistently advocated for finding solutions rather than confrontation, placing communication at the heart of all actions. Since February 2023, he has been a Strategic Advisor at Ryan Public Affairs and Communication. He is also regularly called upon to comment on negotiations and disputes in the news as a specialist in labor relations, through weekly columns or media interventions.
